Beyond the Valley of the Dolls By Marshall Fine
You either love Russ Meyer's garishly sexist movies about bodacious
babes and priapic men or you find them utterly disgusting. The response to
his work is that clear-cut. This film, which features a screenplay by
critic Roger Ebert, barely qualifies as a sequel to the film based on
Jacqueline Susann's trashy bestseller. Rather, it's a broad, trashy remake
on its own terms about what happens to a trio of female rock musicians
when they leave the Midwest and head for Hollywood. Sex, drugs,
murder--the only thing it doesn't have is cannibalism, the gold standard
when it comes to trashy entertainment.

"If I recall correctly, I loved the ending. Really. And not just because it meant I could stop watching the movie. When a typical ending could have written where the camera pulls back after all the bloodshed and the credits start to roll, that guy gets up out of his wheelchair with "I can walk!" lines. Great!
Who gets the credit for that? Russ or Roger?" --Anonymous | "Oh my god what a good movie. I have never seen such a creative piece of work, yah the lesbian scenes are a bit much but I tell yah, the scene in the Bentley had me laughing in tears on the floor, Harris is almost 2 cute. It is my all time favorite movie!" --Sexy Baby |
