Capricorn One By Jeff Shannon
Thanks to repeated showings on cable television and home video, this
speculative thriller has built quite a loyal following since its release
in 1978. The provocative "what if?" scenario still packs a
punch, even if it is not always believable. James Brolin, Sam Waterston,
and O.J. Simpson star as three astronauts who agree to spare the
government embarrassment by faking their historic landing on Mars after
their spacecraft is determined to be unsafe for blastoff. When a scheming
mission controller (Hal Holbrook) plots to kill the astronauts in a staged
capsule fire, the trio embarks on a dangerous mission to expose the truth.
Elliott Gould costars as the journalist determined to crack the
conspiracy, and director Peter Hyams turns up the tension with an exciting
chase sequence involving Telly Savalas as an eccentric barnstormer who
comes to Gould's aid.

"Good, clean, fun thriller starring the show-stealing Hal Holbrook. Good helicopter chase scenes, an intense Sci-Fi soundtrack, and really good acting make this one a keeper. Watch or buy, it's a must-see!" --PinkPanther | "What a great movie and with all the excitement around the two Mars rovers this is a great movie to rent or purchase. I remember 1 was 11 years old when this movie was released and I told my parents I really wanted to see it. My Dad was complaining the whole way to the movie how he hates science fiction movies (he hated Star Wars, Close Encounters, etc. ) Well the movie starts and he is surprised that it is a "realistic" movie, he was expecting Darth Vader to come out or something. I keep looking over at him during the movie and I can tell he is really getting into it, his eyes never left the screen. After the movie, as we are walking out to the car he says to me "that was a really good movie and I'm sorry about what I said before, what a great movie". Well when you are 11 and you Dad says that to you, well you never forget it and that is why Capricorn One is in my DVD collection and will always be mine and my dad's movie. We watched it the day I got the DVD and he smiled and didn't have to say a word. I miss you Dad.
Thanks for letting me post this on your website and if you haven't seen Capricorn One - check it out. My Dad will be smiling. [Editor's note: Thank you for visiting and posting!]" --GSDupont, Boca Raton, FL |
