Gates of Heaven

By (Video Publisher)

Applauded for being funny, inspiring and bizarre, Gates of Heaven is the celebrated pet cemeteries "documentary" that is in reality an unorthodox look at life. Inspired by an article entitled "450 Dead Pets Going To Napa Valley", filmmaker Errol Morris set out to capture the event which centered around the transport of hundreds of animal remains from one pet cemetery to another. Using a straightforward cinematic approach to film his "stars" - pet cemetery proprietors, embalmers, pet owners, et al - Morris simply turns on the camera and lets them speak. The result? Remarkable disclosures about life, work and feelings that transcend its surface subject altogether and make Gates of Heaven an unforgettable statement about American dreams and values. Echoing the praise of numerous film critics, Roger Ebert calls this extraordinary film a "meditation on love, death, greed and loneliness."
