Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman RIAA Certified Gold! Click here to see this CD at Amazon.com!

By Steve Stolder

Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-'70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman's "Wild World," "Into White," and "Longer Boats" indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Yes, he was prone to airy platitudes, but when he harnessed his eccentricities, as he did throughout this 1970 masterwork, you had something truly distinctive. A natural cult artist, la Tim Buckley and Leonard Cohen, Stevens connected with record-buyers to the tune of 25 million units sold before he changed his name to Yusuf Islam, established an Islamic school, and raised a ruckus by supporting Ayatollah Khomeini's death decree against author Salman Rushdie. This remastered 2000 version of the 1970 recording, which was overseen by the artist, is a vast improvement over the earlier CD reissue.

Your Memories Shared!

"My first love and I were big Cat Stevens fans and everytime I hear that music it reminds me of him. His music bring me back to time that I had no worries other than boyfriends and school."

--Sam

"Cat Stevens had some of the more lyrical compositions. My favorite on this album is Sad Lisa:

Her eyes like windows, tricklin' rain
Upon her pain getting deeper.
Though my love wants to relieve her.
She walks alone from wall to wall.
Lost in a hall, she cant hear me.
Though I know she likes to be near me.

Lisa lisa, sad lisa lisa.
Ah, college days!"

"Yes without doubt Tea for the Tillerman would certainly rank very highly on Album releases in the Super70s, His enormous talent as a singer/songwriter had a strong impact on music, not only in the U. K. domestic music scene but internationally, his album sales worldwide speaks volumes, He's probably sold around 30 million Albums worldwide.

How many of todays Media Hungry celebrities would have had the courage to take the step he took in 1977, not many if any I imagine. [Editor's note: Courage is what Salmon Rushdie showed by not backing down to the thugs - like Cat Stevens - who called for his death when he created his art. This from the artist who brought us Peace Train? I remain respectful of the artist Cat Stevens and still listen to his music. But there aren't many who can separate the art from the artist and Cat Stevens the man has a lot to answer for.] And for him there was never going to be the expected comeback we've seen from other artists, I'm glad that music lovers everywhere still enjoy his wonderful music, my favorite tracks are Wild Wild World, Father & Son, Peace Train.

Tea for the Tillerman is a class piece of work and in my opinion will become Cat Stevens Legacy to the world of Music. Eric Clapton once said of Richard Manual of "The Band", He's the closest I've seen to genius in a white man. Cat Stevens is the closest to genius I've seen in a Singer/Songwriter."
