Jimi Hendrix Dead at 27

By Patrick Mondout

Pioneering rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix died September 18, 1970 in London at age 27 of drug-related causes. Rock music was changed forever the first time Hendrix set foot in a studio to record his own album. His one-of-a-kind style and stage antics would be much imitated by musicians of disparate backgrounds in decades to come but never equaled. Every decade or so another generation discovers him all over again and he has another comeback from beyond the grave.

Hendrix Museum

Microsoft co-founder and long time Hendrix fan Paul Allen began planning for a modest gallery of Hendrix memorabilia in 1992. By the time the Experience Music Project site opened on June 23, 2000, it was a 140,000 square foot multimedia complex with a scope beyond simply memorializing Hendrix. Like his idol, Allen is a native of Seattle and the complex is located near the Space Needle. You can learn more about the EMP here.

Your Memories Shared!

"I saw Jimi at the Lewisville International Pop Festival in 1969 in Texas. Hearing Purple Haze the first time changed the course of my life! I have asked that it be played at my wake along with the rest of the seminal Are You Experienced? album (yes, that's right, on VINYL!) Quelle send off! Music since Jimi is just a knock off..."

"Jimi Hendrix was the best guitar player. No one can touch him."
