Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson RIAA Certified Platinum! Click here to see this CD at Amazon.com!

By Don Harrison

The late Harry Nilsson's creative and commercial peak, this LP showcases the singer/songwriter's lighthearted worldview to best advantage. It remains one of the best, most consistent, and least dated albums from an early-'70s era not known for underplayed, unpretentious subtlety. Here you get strong interpretive singing (how ironic that this tunesmith's biggest hits were covers, such as Badfinger's "Without You"), inventive arranging (the hilarious, marble-mouthed "Coconut"), and distinctive melodicism (check out that lovely paean to the stars, "The Moonbeam Song"). In keeping with the domesticated figure on the cover--complete with housecoat, cigarette, and waiting refrigerator--the mood is laidback and homey, Nilsson's multi-octave voice was never so full of life, and there's a palpable feeling of comfort in both the production and the material. Other LPs (like the John Lennon-produced Pussy Cats and the essential Nilsson Sings Newman) have their moments, but this is where to begin any Nilsson collection.

Tracks
1. Gotta Get Up6. Without You
2. Driving Along7. Coconut
3. Early In The Morning8. Let the Good Times Roll
4. Moonbeam Song9. Jump Into The Fire
5. Down10. I'll Never Leave You

"Harry Nilsson- the chameleon. What a paradox this guy is. His humor can be subtle and brilliant. His humor can be crude and sophmoric. His voice can be smooth as silk or rough as sandpaper. He sings about trains and puppies, moonbeams and desks, and dying and telling a girl to f*** off. He rocks and he croons and he burps. And this album is the most uneven of all his releases- which believe it or not, is a good thing here. You get all 2,413 Nilsson's in one album. Sometimes several Nilsson's appear on the same recording. So I heartily reccomend this wonderful, eclectic CD! You see, I like songs about trains and puppies, moonbeams and desks and dying and telling a girl to f*** off. Just don't play it in mixed company!"

"I think he is great! He was and still is all I listen to.I love his voice and the music, all his songs put a smile on my face and joy in my heart. Thanks for making me smile .The music now sucks and has no meaning,no joy,no dance... but Nil's music is fantastic."

"I think I first heard Everybody's Talkin thanks to the Forrest Gump sountrack. I loved the song right away. It has this 72-74 typical sound that I love, and of course the arpegio, and this melody that makes u wanna hit the road . as the only cd I could find was his "best of", I was sure I wouldnt be deceived. In fact, out of the double cd, almost 40 songs, only three worthed a listening, the one mentionned before, plus two Beatles covers. I mean, it sounded so low-quality-sentimental-wannabe stuff that mothers-in-law would love to hear. It's like Nilsson has been given this fantastic song to lounch his carrer with but could't keep up the song's quality with his own song-writing."

"Today in '02 it's mostly Harry Who? Nilson Shmillson opened the flood gates to the Super70s with "Jump into the fire" and "Cocanut" and of course "Without you". If you look hard enough there is plenty of Beatle influence here, Richard Perry produced and Lennon, Harrison, & Starr were big fans as well as there durring the recording sessions. After you have thoroughly loved this one I reccomend "Son of Schmilsson" for just as good a blast. Harry's gone now, the victim of a heart attack in '93 but his music will live on in my house."
