Neil Young - Tonight's the Night .gif) By Steve Knopper
By 1975 Young had written some of the most enduring anthems in rock
history. But from the slow, tension-building piano opening of
"Tonight's the Night," he downshifts into darkness and Crazy
Horse's folk-country melodies take on a guttural hum that would eventually
speak to generations of punk and grunge musicians. Inspired by the
overdose deaths of two of Young's friends, roadie Bruce Berry and
guitarist Danny Whitten, the title track (and its closing reprise) is a
hypnotic cry of "why?" Even the relative party songs, "Come
On Baby Let's Go Downtown" and "Roll Another Number," fit
the album's bus-to-nowhere resignation.

"Tonights The night is one of the finest Neil Young albums he has ever written. I agree with the review the songs are quiet, yet powerful and certainly contemplating. "Borrowed Tune" is a good example, his creeking voice is just right for the song and indeed the album" --Anonymous | "Unmistakingly, Tonight's the Night is not only Neil Young's best album ever - It's no doubt one of Rocks greatest ever! One of the rawest albums ever recorded during a time in history where eveything was coming to a head - Rock, Drugs, Politics, etc.
Neil Young sums up the times in this album - just listen to the track 'New Mama' and you can sense the feelings of the mid Super70s. What can I say - I listen to it frequently still today and it's as fresh and crude sounding as the first time I heard the opening piano notes of 'Tonight's the Night'. Buy it - Listen to in - hear and feel the mid Super70s!" --Lester D from MB, CA |
