By Jon Wiederhorn

At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love."

Tracks
1. Runnin' With the Devil7. Atomic Punk
2. Eruption8. Feel Your Love Tonight
3. You Really Got Me9. Little Dreamer
4. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love10. Ice Cream Man
5. I'm the One11. On Fire
6. Jamie's Cryin'

"As a guitarist myself, you'll have to excuse my view of the Van Halen debut album from the perspective of a guitar player. The year was 1978 and a new album by a little-known obscure band was about to hit the shelves. The fallout from this album would be the total un-doing of rock guitar as we knew it. A 21-year-old little snot-nosed punk named, Edward Van Halen would turn the world of rock guitar, along with it's current "convetional wisdoms" inside out, and proverbially bury all of the so-called "Guitar-gods" of the time. (Page, Blackmore, Iommi and others) Although Edward's two-handed tapping/hammer-on technique were nothing new, he's the one who broght it to the forefront, thus creating an entire generation of players, (including myself) who would follow suit.

It is also important to point out that not only his techniques , but also his style of instrument were adopted by this "new generation of players". These players not only emulated Edward's technique but also chose to equip themselves with homemade, single-pickup, whammy-bar-equipped "strats" (this led to the later development of the "Floyd Rose" and "Kahler" whammy-bar systems) Eddie Van Halen's influence on guitar players is still just as powerful as it was when he literally "crashed" the scene in 1978 and will continue for some time. He is a player who absolutely cannot be ignored. In my opinion, Eddie will continue to set the standards for young players for generations to come!"

"Van Halen is one of the last great rock & roll bands of the Super70s who made it on their music, their shows, their image & their attitude alone before MTV while their debut album is one of the greatest debut albums in the history of rock & roll showcasing the guitar virtuosity of Eddie Van Halen which has never been surpassed since along with the swaggering vocals of the flamboyant David Lee Roth as well as being one of the last rock bands that had any impact on my life during my youth which is why right after VH exploded on the rock scene back in 78 rock & roll has been kind of lifeless. "
