By Rob O'Connor

Their debut album went gold in record time and the initial hype from the Beatles' own label (Capitol) was that this was the group destined to be the next big thing--which they were for this one album. "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" were the big hits. But the hype and their overnight success set off a "Nuke the Knack" backlash that saw their subsequent records fail miserably. Get the Knack, however, is great power pop. "Your Number or Your Name," "Lucinda," "Oh Tara" and "That's What the Little Girls Do" are all top notch pieces of songcraft, brought to their fullest potential by the flawless production by Mike "Commander" Chapman.

Your Memories Shared!

"This was the summer of 1979 and Disco's stronghold was being broken by the Punk's metamorphous, New Wave. Spearheading this movement were bands like The Cars and Elvis Costello.

No one broke through with such a vengeance as the Knack. Not the most artistically inclined band, they still gave us what we hungered for, catchy pop tunes the likes of which had not been heard since the British invasion of the 60's.

That was my Senior Summer and you couldn't go anywhere without hearing the base line of my Sharona booming out of car speaker. Their importance in paving the way for other New Wavers to follow can't be overstated.

Perhaps it was bad marketing, or maybe they were just too cocky. As quickly as they had entered the charts they were gone, the Knack were "Nuked" and after two more albums quietly disbanded."

"This was my favorite album when I was in high school. Can it really have been that longh ago?"

"I remember buying this album in 1980 when I couldn't find the 45 "Good Girls Don't". I was weary of The Knack because of their straight forward pop rock sound and I was into hard rock. Needless to say it is one of my all time favorite albums of any band now in 2002"
