Campaign '76

President Ford, the only president to not win a national election, faced an uphill battle from the day he pardoned former President Nixon. By September 1976, the peanut farmer from Georgia (Jimmy Carter) had an 18 point lead on Ford. Various factors, including a remark in Playboy magazine that today would be viewed as a rather tame, caused the Carter lead to evaporate almost entirely. In the end, Carter won a narrow victory and became the first Democrat to win the presidency since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
