As Richard Nixon continued Lyndon Johnson's practice of not debating his opponents, the 1976 presidential debates were the first since the Nixon/Kennedy debates of 1960 and the vice-presidential debates were the first ever.

Background to the Debates

On September 18, 1976, David Gergen, who was a Special Assistant to Ford's Chief of Staff Dick Cheney, wrote a memo criticizing the prevailing debate strategies for Ford.
