Campaign '76: Debates
As Richard Nixon continued Lyndon Johnson's practice of not debating
his opponents, the 1976 presidential debates were the first since the
Nixon/Kennedy debates of 1960 and the vice-presidential debates were the
first ever.

On September 18, 1976, David Gergen, who was a Special Assistant to
