1970 Topps Super BaseballBy Patrick Mondout
Topps released a set of "Supers" again in 1970, but this set
was different in a number of ways to the '69 Supers. Those earlier cards
were actually slightly smaller (a quarter inch both ways) than the
regular issue. Hardly "super" in my book, even if they were
quite attractive (and quite valuable). These cards are 3 1/8 by 5 1/4 inch
in size and very thick with rounded corners (which collectors usually
hate). The backs had blue and yellow print on a cream card stock and
featured the same look as the player's 1970 Topps card..
The key card of the set is Boog Powell and it commands quite a lot of
attention if not always a premium. While it may well have been
short-printed, so were seven other cards and I have yet to hear a logical
reason why this card is considered much more scarce than the others. These
cards were presumably printed on sheets of 63, which means that a whole
set of cards plus half again (42+21=63) were printed over and over. Thus
half should be short printed, not just eight. There are other mathematical
possibilities here, but that seems the most logical.
We mention this set here and have a picture
of both the back of the Hank Aaron card and a wax pack. Here is a complete
