1975 Baseball Cards

By Patrick Mondout

Topps had been cutting back on inserts and oddball sets for years and only produced one in 1975. But it was a very hot item in the early Awesome80s. Topps produced a "mini" set of all 660 cards from its standard set that varied only by card size. They were regionally distributed and most collectors seemed unaware of them until well into the 1976 season. As such, the big news of 1975 was entry to Hostess to the card market. Their set was a pain to collect, but it offered at least token competition to Topps, who badly needed it.

The first MSA (Michael Schechter Associates) test discs appeared in 1975. There were only a few (Aaron, Bench, Hunter, Lynn, Rose and Seaver), but several hundred discs would follow over the rest of the Super70s.

Interest in minor league cards increased in the mid-Super70s and TCMA began producing more sets. There were at least 25 sets produced, including the first from Cramer. Interesting sets from '75 include the Waterloo Royals (Willie Wilson and Dan Quisenberry), Burlington Bees (Moose Haas), Tulsa Oilers (Larry Hearndon), Dubuque (Terry Puhl) and the Lafayette Drillers (Jack Clark). They also produced a set of International League All-Stars (from '74) that included Gary Carter.

The cards were "minor league" in more ways than one. They usually featured black and white photography and lots of errors. That was part of their charm to some.
