1979 Burger King Baseball

For the third (and final) year in a row, Topps produced a pair of 22 card teams set for Burger King in 1979. This time it was the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. The cards were given out in restaurants in those markets.

The cards are virtually identical to the Topps standard set with only the card numbers on the back varying. The exceptions to this are noted in the checklist below and include a Pete Rose showing him in a Phillies uniform plus Luis Tiant and Tommy John in pinstripes. In addition, the Ron Guidry card features the photo used in his '79 Topps Record Breaker card and the only separate manager card the company printed in 1979 is included (Danny Ozark of the Phillies; see below).

Customers received three cards plus a checklist (see below) wrapped in cellophane with an order of large fries. So after a few as eight orders of greasy fries, you might be lucky enough to have all 22 different cards. In reality, 15 trips or more were needed to complete a set. Between all the Hostess Twinkies, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and BK Whoppers, baseball card fans put on a few pounds in 1979.
