1970-71 Topps Basketball Cards

By Patrick Mondout

Topps basketball cards improved in their second straight year of distribution in 10 wax packs. There are 76 additional cards in this set, which is once again oversized at 2.5" by 4 11/16". This allows for league leaders, all stars and playoffs subsets.

The wax packs also featured one of 24 fold-out "Giant Action Posters." The 11/16" x 9 5/8" fold-out thin paper-thin posters featured action shots from games (see below). The Bob Rule poster usually does better than you would expect at auction because it also features Bill Russell - who does not have his own poster. Topps also produced posters inserts for the football and baseball wax packs.

The cards are even more colorful than the '69-70s, with just a small white border surrounding the large rounded-corner design (see right). One of several vivid colors is used as the background behind the usually posed player (a few cards have photos taken during warmups or during the game and have black backgrounds). A large basketball with the player's name, position, and team is on the bottom-right or bottom-left of each card front.

The backs are a pleasure to read. The card's size helps, but the orange, gray, and black inks on a light-colored back with a clean, uncluttered design make this set's flipsides first-rate. Complete statistics and a small biography are accompanied by a one-frame cartoon about the player.

The most valuable card in the set is the rookie card of 'Pistol' Pete Maravich. Other rookies cards include Calvin Murphy, Fred Carter and Pat Riley.
