1972 DraftBy Patrick Mondout
The Buffalo Bills needed help on the defensive side of the ball and
picked Lombardi Award winner Walt Patulski from Notre Dame. He turned out
to be one of the biggest busts of the Super70s. He played three
unremarkable seasons with the Bills before Lou Saban shipped him to St.
Louis for a 1976 second round pick (which was used on Iowa tackle Joe
Devlin). After missing the 1976 season with a knee injury, Patulski played
one more year before retiring.
Patulksi's line-mate at Notre Dame Mike Kadish was taken with the 25th
pick of the first round by Miami - a team that was about to complete a
perfect season (though they were so loaded that Kadish spent the season on
the taxi squad). He actually contributed far more to the Bills than
Patulski. The Dolphins sent him to Buffalo before the '73 season and by
1977, he was voted the team's defensive MVP.
Franco Harris is the only member of the 1972 draft class to be inducted
into the Hall of Fame.
