1975 Draft

By Patrick Mondout

First overall selection Steve Bartkowski (QB, California) did not have a Hall of Fame career, but was a solid selection and played in a pair of Pro Bowls. Second pick Randy White (DT, Maryland) became Super Bowl co-MVP and is enshrined in Canton. Walter Payton (RB, Jackson State) retired with the most yards rushing in NFL history and was an easy Hall choice as one of the best running backs ever.

A pair of 1974 trading deadline deals for quarterbacks had a major impact on the draft. The Cowboys traded disgruntled QB Craig Morton (who was stuck behind first Don Meredith and then Roger Staubach) to the Giants - their division rivals - and received what turned out to be the second overall pick which it used to take White.

The Rams sent 34 year old QB John Hadl to the Dan Devine's Packers for a pair of first round picks (including what became the 9th pick in this draft), a pair of second round picks, and a third round pick. Hadl's replacement, James Harris led the team to a 10-4 record and their first playoff victory since the early 1950s. The Packers continued their downward spiral and Devine resigned to take the Notre Dame head coaching job rather than being fired. He had been the 1972 Coach of the Year. Such is the life of an NFL coach.

Below is the first round of the 1975 NFL draft. We also have the entire 17 round draft.
