1978 DraftBy Patrick Mondout
The Buccaneers once again qualified for the first pick in the draft but
with Tampa having spent the first overall pick on RB Ricky Bell the
previous year and with Earl Campbell clearly the best player on the board,
the Bucs traded the pick to Houston for the #17 pick overall (which it
used on Grambling QB Doug Williams), future four-time Pro Bowl TE Jimmie
Giles, and a pair of second rounders which Tampa turned into G Brett
Moritz, DE Reggie Lewis, and future USFL star QB Chuck Fusina.
Injuries prevented Campbell from playing for long, but he was amazing
his first six years. He nearly became the second player to run for 2,000
yards in 1980 (he ran for 1,934 despite missing most of week three's game
against Baltimore and all of week four's game against Cincinnati).
Cleveland managed to score Hall of Fame tight end Ozzie Newsome and USC
linebacker Clay Matthews in the first round. Green Bay picked the other
member of the Hall in Stanford WR James Lofton.
Below is the first round of the 1978 NFL draft. We also have the
