World Bowl IBy Patrick Mondout
The Birmingham Americans stormed out to a 22-0 lead through three
quarters only to see Florida mount a furious fourth quarter comeback in
World Bowl I.
With the score 22-14 and with just under 5 minutes left, Birmingham
punted to Florida's Rod Foster - the WFL's third
leading punt returner during the regular season. Foster broke two
tackles and spun out of another on his way to an exciting 76 yard punt
return for a touchdown.
There was no kicked "extra point" in the WFL. Instead, an
"action point" was played from the two yard line much like the
two-point conversion in the modern NFL. The Blazers lined up to tie the
game with 4:14 remaining. Florida's all-star
running back Tommy Reamon took the handoff and headed wide right in a
sweep. He was stopped just short of the goal and the score remained 22-21.
Birmingham moved the ball with ease in the final moments and picked up
three first downs while running out the clock on the Blazers. The game
ended with the Americans on the Blazers one yard line. A one point victory
was enough for Birmingham.
