CHiPSBy Scott Schaeffer
"7-Mary-3 and 7-Mary-4 responding . . ."
"CHiPs" (an acronym/nickname for California Highway Patrol)
followed the day to day shift work of two uniformed police officers riding
motorcycles. Jon Baker, played by Larry Wilcox, was the training officer
assigned to partner with probationary officer Frank "Ponch"
Poncherello, played by Erik Estrada. The duo cruised the freeways of Los
Angeles County trying to keep the motoring public safe from harm.
A typical episode consisted of three or four unrelated incidents handled
by Ponch and Jon during their shift. (This style was pioneered by the
earlier series "Adam-12" and "Emergency!".)
Shoot-outs never happened, as Ponch and Jon never even drew their weapons
during the entire series, but high speed chases and spectacular
multi-vehicle crashes on the freeway were usually a part of every episode.
The series was created by Rick Rosner, a reserve deputy with the Los
Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who was later responsible for the
rescue show "240-Robert".
"CHiPs" also received much technical assistance from the actual
California Highway Patrol. It enjoyed a successful six-year, 138-episode
run on NBC from 1977 to 1983.
