McCloudBy Leona Jean
McCloud (Dennis Weaver) was a cowboy-hat wearing detective from Taos,
New Mexico who found himself in New York chasing down a prisoner who had
escaped from him. After he captured his man, he found himself on temporary
assignment in Manhattan. He stayed on (for seven seasons!) in order to
learn the methods used by a metropolitan police department.
McCloud and Sgt. Joe Broadhurst (played by Terry Carter) usually solved
the crime. McCloud always had his own Southwestern take on justice and
solved cases his way (rather than by the book). This was a source of
tension between himself and both Sgt. Broadhurst and Chief Clifford (J. D.
Cannon).
The most amusing aspect of the show was watching McCloud run around
1970s New York solving crimes dressed in a cowboy hat and western
clothes. His favorite phrase was "there you go". His romantic
interest was a writer (Diana Muldaur) who had been working on a book about
the criminal that McCloud came to New York to recapture.
McMillan and Wife, McCloud, and Columbo
were the three original rotating series in the NBC Mystery Movies and Rod
Serling's Night Gallery soon
joined them.

McCloud was based on the 1968 Clint Eastwood film titled "Coogan's Bluff". which dealt with a Texas Ranger type going to New York City to Capture a Criminal who fled to the concrete canyons of New York City and dealing out frontier justice along the way.
Often Marshal Sam McCloud was often mistaken for a Texas Ranger or someone from Oklahoma or Arizona. --Frank91165 | Note: This is just a random sample of the McCloud messages in our TV forums! Click here to see what others have said or to post your own comments! |
