Alias Smith and Jones
Essentially an attempt by Universal and ABC to cash in on the
popularity of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," this series
starring Pete Duel and (Paul Newman lookalike) Ben Murphy debuted as a
midseason replacement and held its own against the immensely popular
"Flip Wilson Show."
Despite its roots as a ripoff of a popular movie, Alias Smith and
Jones was a smart, witty show very much in the tradition of
"Maverick." Duel and Murphy had excellent chemistry as the
gentle outlaws trying to go straight but always on the run from the law as
they await the governor's promise of amnesty.
The show suffered greatly following the apparent suicide of Deuel on
New Year's Eve 1971. He was hastily (and insensitively) replaced by the
less charismatic Roger Davis who had been narrating the show's opening
credits. The show finally came to the end of its trail in January 1973
after spending its final half-season opposite All
in the Family on Saturday nights.

I think that the chemistry between Pete Duel and Ben Murphy was very special Alias Smith and Jones has been my favorite show since I was 5 years old. My favorite episode was "The McCreedy Bust, Going Going Gone." Burl Ives and Ceasar Romero guest starred. --Cindy '65 | Note: This is just a random sample of the Alias Smith and Jones messages in our TV forums!
