Carter Country

By phictal

This short-lived racial comedy was set in a small Georgia town of Clinton Corners, "just down the road from Plaines."*

The bulk of the series took place in the city hall/police station, with Richard Paul as Mayor Teddy Burnside and Victor French as Roy Mobey, the cuddly redneck chief of police. It can be thought of as a comic version of In the Heat of the Night, though it certainly never hit the critical or commercial heights of that show.

The signature line belonged to Mayor Burnside, who delegated authority with a sweep of his hands and a "hannil it, hannil it" (handle it).

* Plaines, George was home to President Jimmy Carter, hence "Carter Country." That the town was called "Clinton Corners" is all the more ironic in retrospect given the name of the next Southern in the Oval Office.

Your Memories Shared!

My particular favorite was the one where Victor French swore up one side and down another he seen a UFO and keep talking about it in detail while others looked at thim like he was smoking crack until the end of the show when everyone up and leaves the building and the UFO showed up and shook the place. But my favorite line in the show was he was cooking pork chops and asked the deputy " Kinda makes yer mouth water donnit? " and he responds sarcastically " NO...MY EYES!!!".
