Dean Martin ShowBy Pete Jamison
From 1965 to 1974 (and then continuing with spinoff "Celebrity
Roasts"), this ensemble act/institution was one of the last of the
variety shows that had been a US television staple since the 1950's. When
TV began, many traditions of vaudeville were honored since there was no
other precedent (possibly due to lack of videotape with which to eliminate
mistakes). Add to that Martin's aversion to rehearsals and you got a
pretty spontaneous result week after week, with the star milking it all
the way, since to the audience, the spontaneity seemed due to the cast
being liquored up (Martin frequently faked the drinking with a highball
glass of apple juice).
