Sierra

By Patrick Mondout

A short-lived adventure series for NBC on Thursday nights in the Fall of 1974, Sierra featured National Park Service rangers Tim Cassidy (James Richardson) and Matt Harper (Ernest Thompson), who worked with Chief Ranger Jack Moore (Jack Hogan) at the fictional Sierra National Park. Fellow rangers P.J. Lewis (Mike Warren) and Julie Beck (Susan Foster) rounded out the cast.

Ecology was a buzzword of the decade - the first Earth Day had been celebrated a mere four years earlier - and this show centered around the ranger's challenges of accommodating the tourists and preserving the wilderness.

It seemed every episode also featured the rangers humorous attempts to keep a certain bear (nicknamed Cruncher by the rangers) from breaking into the park's trashcans for food.

Much of the series was filmed on location in beautiful Yosemite National Park.

Your Memories Shared!

I don't know why this show sticks in my head. I was in Junior High School when it aired and I think it was only on for one season. I can still hear the theme song. It goes something like... Sierra majesty, up to the sky. Sierra majesty, where eagles fly. You are my life to me, You are my home, I'll dum da de dumm, Dum dum da de. I remember singing it to myself on my way to class. I remember it was about rangers caring for a national park somewehre in the Sierras. One of the rangers was a widower. His wife had died while mountain climbing and there was some sort of question about whether he was responsible. But I recall other rangers did not want to climb with him because they had their doubts about his abilities. But one of the other main characters ended up in some predicament and had to rely on this ranger and putting his trust in the guy really helped him out. There was one episode where they took a bunch of physically challenged kids on a nature hike. That is the only story line I can remember. Oh please, does anyone else remember this show? Does anyone else remember the theme song? Or anything about the main characters?
