Hurricane Anita

By Wikipedia

Hurricane Anita was a powerful hurricane during an otherwise quiet 1977 Atlantic hurricane season.

Anita formed in late August, making it one of the latest forming first storms of a hurricane season (The season starts 1 June). Anita was the most intense storm of the season, reaching Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Anita moved through the Gulf Of Mexico in an unusual southwest direction, slamming into Mexico, south of the Texas border. Anita killed 10 people. The amount of damage was never recorded.

The name Anita was retired following this storm.

Your Memories Shared!

"I was actually on my way to New Orleans, LA from Tacoma, WA where I had been stationed. I was being transferred to Ft Rucker, Al, when I decided to make a vacation out of it and we left for a Van-In in New Orleans. On our way there I visited a army buddy in Galveston, TX, when the storm hit. We stayed that night in the van, in a parking lot between Galveston and Houston. Next day we headed for N. O and Anita followed. It wasn't that bad that night, except for the mosquitos, which where huge, and the van shook a little. Well, the Van-In wasn't scheduled for the Labor Day weekend, and I decided to go to St Petersburg, Fl, where there was one. We arrived there at midnight and went straight to the camp site. We had one heck of a good time, even though it rained the whole first day. Thinking back on it, it was good that we didn't have the TV on in the van, because we probably would not have gone. When I actually got to FT Rucker a few months later and visited Panama City Beach and seen all the destruction there I realized we were pretty lucky to not have been living along the coast. Like they say, ignorance is bless. "
