IronsideBy Leona Jean
Raymond Burr played the part of Robert T. Ironside. He was a 25 year
police dept veteran who rose to the position of San Francisco's Chief of
Detectives. An assassination attempt on his life left him paralyzed from
the waist down. Consequently he was wheel chair bound and traveled in a
specially modified police van. Ironside was the first prime time TV show
character with a "handicap" and was much praised by critics and
advocates for the physically challenged.
Commissioner Randall, played by Gene Lyons allowed Ironside to fight crime
as a Special Consultant. He was given two assistants. Sgt Ed Brown played
by Don Galloway and Eve Whitfield played by Barbara Anderson. His aide and
bodyguard Mark Sanger was played by Don Mitchell he later became a lawyer
on the show.
A contract dispute with Barbara Anderson led to her leaving after the
1970-71 season. Elizabeth Baur who played Officer Fran Belding replaced
her.
Dana Wynter was in several episodes as an Ironside love interest.
In all, NBC aired 199 Ironside episodes between 1967 and 1975. In 1993
Ironside returned for a made for tv movie called “Return of Ironside”,
reuniting the entire cast including Barbara Anderson. In the Movie Mark
Sanger returned as a judge.

Ironside was the second TV series for Raymond Burr. His first was Perry Mason, and he was a superlative actor in both series. Besides the incomparable Raymond Burr as chief Robert Ironside, the series also boasted a great supporting ensemble cast. I thought it was a classy, intelligent detective show that never failed to entertain. It"s still in syndicaton, and I look forward to seeing it whenever I have time to. --Anonymous | Note: This is just a random sample of the Ironside messages in our TV forums!
