Lanigan's RabbiBy Patrick Mondout
The short-lived police drama Lanigan's Rabbi, which starred Art Carney
as Chief Paul Lanigan and Bruce Solomon was Rabbi Small, was based on the
series of novels of the same name by Harry Kemelman.
Lanigan was the police chief for the small, fictional town of Cameron,
California. Rabbi Small was a bit of an amateur sleuth, which his good
friend Lanigan found quite useful when tough murder cases crossed his
desk.
The reporter who hounded Lanigan for scoops about the latest crimes was
Bobbie Whitaker, played by none other than Art Carney's daughter Barbara.
It was shown as part of NBC's Mystery Movie series (in rotation with McCloud,
Columbo
and McMillan
& Wife) starting in January 1977, when it took the place of Quincy
M.E. (which had earned a slot of its own). .
