Here Come The Brides

By Western critic

Based on the popular musical, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", Here Comes the Brides was a pioneer western series starring Robert Brown ("Primus"), David Soul ("Starsky & Hutch"), and pop-idol Bobby Sherman ("Shindig", "Getting Together") as the Bolt brothers, owners of a Seattle timber business who import numerous Eastern woman into their rough & tumble bachelor camp.

The series also featured veteran film star Joan Blondell ("A Tree Grows In Brooklyn"), as a saloon owner not unlike Gunsmoke's Miss Kitty Russell. The theme "Seattle", gave Sherman a top ten hit which fueled several more including "Julie, Julie, Julie (Do Ya Love Me?)" & "Jennifer".

In 1974, Sherman & actor Wes Stern were spun-off from guest roles in "The Partridge Family" to play struggling song writing musicians in, "Getting Together". The series was short-lived, but gave Sherman another LP and a couple of top 30 songs.

Today Robert Brown is retired from stage and TV, Soul is living in Europe (Spain at last report), and Sherman volunteers his time & energy as a Los Angeles paramedic. Although the series lasted on ABC Friday nights for about 2 1/2 years, it remains a sentimental favorite with Boomers, both male and female. The last time (I believe) the series ran on US TV was back in 1987-88 on the Family Channel.

The music was what I liked best. It just lifted your heart to hear(was it Perry Como?) singing the opening song. And Bobby Sherman had lots of singing as well. I also think the episode where Biddy confessed her lesbian desires for Candy was very liberating.
