Love, American Style

By Wikipedia

Love, American Style is an hour-long television anthology which originally aired between September 1969 and January 1974.

For the 1971 and 1972 seasons it was a part of an ABC Friday prime-time lineup that included Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, Room 222, and The Odd Couple.

Each week, the show featured different stories of romance, usually with a comedic spin. All episodes were unrelated, featuring different characters, stories and locations. The show often featured the same actors playing different characters in many episodes.

The show may be best known for its February 1972 episode "Love and the Happy Days" which became the pilot for the popular TV series Happy Days. That episode was written by Garry Marshall and featured Ron Howard (as Richie), Marion Ross (as Richie's mother), Anson Williams (as Potsie, Richie's friend), among others. Roles played in the episode by Harold Gould (Howard the father), Susan Neher (Joanie, Richie's sister), and Ric Carrott (Chuck, Richie's brother) were played by other actors in the spin-off.

Your Memories Shared!

Love, American Style was one of my favorite shows broadcast on ABC on Friday nights in the early Super70s. Back then, I was too young to date, drive, or otherwise party on Friday nights. So, what I saw on TV those nights had to keep me entertained, and LAS certainly fit the bill. It was different, in that it was an hour-long comedy anthology show, composed of separate stories within its hour-long time-slot. Many stellar guest-stars appeared on the show during its run, such as Ron Howard, Irene Ryan (Granny from the Beverley Hillbillies) and many others. The series "Happy Days" was actually a spin-off from a story on LAS, which was about an all-american family in Milwaukee, WI during the 50s. I don't think LAS is in syndication anymore, which is a shame, since it was one of the Super70s TV comedy classics.
